Activating Your Community for Design

Your School Design Team should consider a few things before diving into tools and resources for engaging with your community about their aspirations.

It's crucial to understand the fundamentals of community-based design and the ladder of community engagement.

Exploring these concepts will help you grasp the significance of asking both students and the broader community what they want. Engaging with all community members can lead to more meaningful and impactful experiences, ensuring that their voices play a central role in shaping the learning environment. You might learn about these concepts as a group or decide to do a                        protocol and then teach one another.

The Jigsaw Protocol:

Divide the Content: The material is divided into several segments, each covering a different aspect of the overall subject.

Form Expert Groups: Participants are assigned to “expert” groups, each focusing on one segment of the material. They work together to become knowledgeable about their specific segment.

Reorganize into Jigsaw Groups: After becoming experts, participants are reorganized into new groups where each member brings expertise on a different segment. In these “jigsaw” groups, members teach each other about their specific segment.

Share and Synthesize: Each member shares their knowledge, helping the group piece together a comprehensive understanding of the entire topic.
