Exploring Your Current State

Gear Up & Get InspiredGreen Circle

Before you start designing, your team should thoroughly study your school or system as it is now.

Look at existing learning experiences and outcomes, how well things are put into practice, the design of the learning environment, and the overall conditions that affect students.

Understanding these things will help you figure out the best way to design for your community’s needs and give a clear reason for rethinking the educational experience. Before we begin our information gathering, let’s take a moment to consider the roles of three things: conditions, learner experiences, and learner outcomes in shaping our current state.

Let's Gear up & Get Inspired before we Dive in and Try this out!

What is Community-Based Design?

Learner Experience:

The Learner Experience encompasses students’ day-to-day educational interactions, including teaching quality, classroom atmosphere, extracurricular activities, and support systems. It involves students’ overall feelings about their learning environment and their daily educational life. The XQ Design Principles aid School Design Teams in deeply considering the student experience.

Learner Outcome:

Learner outcomes measure the results of the student experience, including academic achievement, skill acquisition, graduation rates, and post-school success. They are assessed through tests, grades, and performance indicators. XQ Learner Outcomes help School Design Teams focus on student outcomes.

Conditions for Innovation

As you reflect on your current state, it’s important to understand how conditions are impacting it. The most successful communities engaged in school redesign have five key conditions in place that are essential for creating exceptional and equitable learning environments. These conditions are crucial for redesigning schools and enhancing learning experiences for all. Reflecting on them can help identify strengths and areas for improvement.

Pause and discuss with your team:

What do you think you might learn about student experiences and outcomes through this exercise?

What is the role of conditions on your current state?
